The 2 times WBA, WBO, IBO and IBF unified heavyweight champion of the world, Anthony Joshua has returned back to Nigeria on a courtesy visit.
Joshua visited Nigeria in July last year after he lost his belts to Andy Ruiz Jr in what was one of boxing’s most shocking defeats. Then, he had visited the Makoko, a slum area in Yaba part of Lagos state. He had also visited paid a visit to the iconic Afrika Shrine where he had met with Femi Kuti, the eldest son of Nigeria’s late Afrobeat legend, Fela Kuti.
Now Joshua is back in Nigeria, after beating Andy Ruiz Jr in a rematch to reclaim his belts on December 7 in faraway Diriyah, Saudi Arabia. This time around however, AJ has gone to visit Sagamu in Ogun state, his place of nativity.
AJ took to Instagram to share some pictures of his visit. He went there with his son JJ, his sister Janet, his mother and some members of his team and paid a visit to His Royal Highness, the Akarigbo of Remo land, Oba Adewale Ajayi.
He was given a rousing hero’s welcome on arrival in Sagamu as residents of the town came out en masse to receive him and his entourage.
AJ is billed to return to the ring in June to defend his titles against his IBF mandatory challenger, Kubrat Pulev of Bulgaria. The fight is expected to take place at the new Tottenham Hotspur stadium with the exact date likely to be the 20th of June.
